- The V2 class was one of Sir Nigel Gresley's most successful designs and ideally suited to their mixed traffic role. A total of 184 locos were built between 1936 and 1944 and could be seen working express passenger trains as well as the fast freights for which they were designed. However, a high axle loading meant that they were barred from some 40% of the LNER network, including all of the former GER.
